Example: Catching a Missing Index
The agent detects this query taking 4.2 seconds on a 50M-row table:

A developer submits this migration:

Agent 3: Capacity Planning & Incident Response
Capacity Planning (Scheduled)
Every night the agent pulls 90 days of storage, CPU, memory, and connection metrics from the monitoring MCP. It fits a growth curve, projects forward 6 and 12 months, and produces a capacity report that includes:
- Tables growing fastest by row count and byte size
- Projected date of hitting 80% disk capacity
- Connection pool utilization trend and projected exhaustion date
- Recommendations: partition candidates, archive candidates, instance resize triggers
The report lands in the engineering lead's inbox every Monday morning. The conversation shifts from "we're almost out of disk" (reactive) to "we'll hit 80% in 11 weeks — here's the plan" (proactive).
Incident Response (Real-Time)
When the monitoring MCP fires a critical alert — replication lag, disk above 85%, connection pool exhausted, long-running transaction — the agent wakes up and begins its runbook:
- Pulls current database metrics (active connections, lock waits, running queries, replication status)
- Identifies the root cause category from the symptom pattern
- Applies the appropriate automated remediation if it's in the safe-to-automate set:
- Kills idle connections beyond the threshold
- Terminates queries running longer than the configured limit (with a logged justification)
- Triggers a failover to the read replica if the primary is unresponsive
- If it cannot safely resolve: pages the on-call DBA via PagerDuty with a pre-written incident summary — current state, what was already tried, recommended next steps
- Continues monitoring and updates the incident thread in Slack every 5 minutes with new readings
